Black Mesa on Mac: the invisible menu and our tested route

Our Black Mesa Mac test found an invisible new menu. See what Lautta changed, what we played, and what remains unverified.

Local test, not a public download

We tested this route on a development Mac. Lautta’s public installer is still being prepared.

What was the problem?

On our development Mac, the default Windows build could render gameplay while its new main and pause menus were invisible. A separate DXVK attempt failed before the menu with a D3D device error. These are observations from our setup, not a claim that every Mac or compatibility tool fails in the same way.

What did Lautta change?

Lautta’s local route used an isolated Wine 11.17 and Steam setup with DirectX 9 rendering and Black Mesa’s classic menu flag, -oldgameui. The game’s own developer documentation recommends that flag when the new menu is invisible.

What did we verify?

The tester confirmed visible main and pause menus, gameplay image, audio and controls. After saving, exiting and starting the game again from Lautta Play, the save loaded. The tester reported fewer noticeable stalls in that session; frame times were not measured.

What remains unverified?

This result applies to one tested Mac and game build. A clean, portable public installation and performance on other Macs have not been verified. Lautta has no public installer yet.
