We tested this route on a development Mac. Lautta’s public installer is still being prepared.
What was the problem?
The owned Windows Steam depot was downloaded and inspected, but that alone did not create an installed game or a verified Play route in Lautta. Fallout 2 already had a separate native Community Edition comparison in which the user confirmed graphics, audio, controls and a save loading after exit and relaunch. We needed to check the Lautta launch itself, rather than treat that standalone comparison as proof that Lautta could start the game.
What did Lautta change?
The development app recognizes the owned Fallout 2 folder and exposes Play only when its existing Community Edition QA copy is present. It starts the separate native engine from that copy’s working directory so earlier test saves stay available there. The original Steam download and user saves remain untouched, and neither game files nor the engine are bundled into Lautta. A normal portable installation lacks this exact local development setup.
What did we verify?
Clicking Fallout II Play in the rebuilt Lautta app changed the button to Stop game, and a visible Fallout II window showed the intro. The user confirmed that this Lautta-launched session reached the menu and playable game world, with working audio and mouse/keyboard controls. Their later clarification confirmed graphics, video, audio, controls and saved games through Lautta for Fallout 2 as well as Fallout 1. The earlier isolated engine save test confirmed that SLOT01 loaded correctly after exit and relaunch. The initial Lautta UI observation did not independently repeat that complete save sequence.
What remains unverified?
The intro video was much smaller than the game window in the observed session; video appearing does not establish ideal scaling. Full campaign completion, frame times, mods, other game distributions and another Mac have not been verified. The native Community Edition engine has its own license, and its redistribution in Lautta remains unresolved. This result covers the tested original Fallout 2 Steam data, not Fallout Tactics or the entire Fallout series. Lautta’s public installer is still being prepared.
